Writer's picture: Shannon SwiftShannon Swift

Wanting voluminous, attention-grabbing, dramatic lashes? There are solutions for that. Needing a last-minute boost for a special occasion or to draw attention away from the dark circles under your eyes? There are remedies for that too. Craving long, healthy natural lashes? There are products for that too! Whatever your goals are, there are options for all of your lash needs. Below we’ve outlined the pros and cons to the most popular choices out there for you to pick the perfect one for you.

Eyelash Extensions

If you’re looking to sing “I woke up like this” like Beyoncé each morning, extensions are a popular and super tempting choice. Probably the biggest benefit to lash extensions is that they are semi-permanent, so they last for 2-3 weeks at a time. You can literally wake up with flawless lashes without doing a thing - not even applying mascara! There are also tons of options to choose from in terms of fiber (i.e. silk, faux-mink, synthetic), length and curl type. You can go totally diva dramatic or just give yourself a little extra boost with a more natural look.

However, this convenience and customization comes at a cost. The process to apply and maintain extensions is pricey, ranging from $100-450 for your first session, then at least $100 for each touch-up afterwards. You may see cheaper options, however, someone dealing with your delicate eyes and eyelashes is something you should think twice before skimping on. Also, depending on your schedule and patience level, the application process done by the technician is super meticulous and initially lasts about two hours. At the session, they tape your eyes shut, which can be uncomfortable for some people, as they carefully attach a false lash to each of your natural lashes.

In addition, there are several risks associated that you have to consider. Firstly, the lash glue they use to apply the extensions is a chemical and usually contains some not-so-glamorous things like formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen, and can irritate and cause inflammation to the eyes, lead to an allergic reaction, or cause dry eyes. As if this wasn’t enough to consider, you would also have a bunch of daily rules to keep in mind. For example, you must avoid showers and steam 48 hours after applications, you have to blow dry them on the cool setting after showering, you must avoid any oil-based products like serums, make-up removers, and heavy eye creams, and you can’t rub your eyes for risk of the lashes falling off! Altogether, the rewards for eyelash extensions can be beautiful and get you all sorts of compliments and likes on Instagram. However, there are definitely high costs and risks you must weigh before making the commitment.

False Lashes

If you’re not ready or willing to make the commitment to eyelash extensions, false lashes is an alternative option. By “false lashes” I’m talking about the ones you buy in a box straight from a pharmacy or make-up store. The good things are that they are way cheaper than extensions and you can apply them yourself if you’re just looking to get a boost for an event or special occasion. However, I can testify to being super late getting out of the door because I’m stuck trying to make these lashes look perfect by myself! Applying them yourself can be tricky, and it’s difficult to make them look exactly how you want them to. Plus, for those with small eyes like myself, you have to trim them and the options you typically find in a store may not really compliment your eye type.

In addition to the application time and likely semi-crooked result, the glue involved in the application is made from chemicals which can also cause an allergic reaction, dryness or other irritations. Plus, it often causes your natural lashes to fall out, especially when trying to remove the glue after you take the lashes off. Overall, this is a good short-term and cost-effective solution if you want to impress for a special day, but it’s not the best option to care for your natural lashes long-term.

Mascara

Applying mascara is part of the majority of women’s make-up routine. Not just a part of it, but pretty much the epicenter and an absolute necessity before stepping out of the door and into the world. Let’s be honest, we’ve all been late to leave in the morning and if there’s only time for one make-up product, it’s got to be mascara. It’s the most practical option for most people, easy to access at any store, affordable, and there are a fair amount of options. Actually, an overwhelming amount of options, which makes the one that you find perfect for you a coveted and sacred item that you hope will never be taken off the market.

However, even with the perfect mascara, it can wind up looking clumpy and eventually smudgy at the end of a long day. Although it’s pretty easily removed, it’s a time-consuming process each day that some people just may not want to do. Plus, even if you’re super careful, you risk losing your natural lashes when taking off mascara. In addition, mascara is still a chemical and depending on your eye sensitivity, it can cause irritation or dryness, especially if you happen to leave it on overnight.

Eyelash Tinting

Another option to get dark, stand-out lashes is tinting. Although it doesn’t actually make your lashes any longer or fuller, it gives the illusion that it does because of the darker shade. Especially if you have light-colored lashes, this will give your eyes an extra pop by making them darker. A great benefit is that there are many color options so you can get the color that’s perfect for you. Plus, each application lasts between 4-8 weeks, depending on the type of tint you choose, and there’s no maintenance needed once it’s been applied.

Although this can be a great alternative to the daily mascara application and removal routine, there are still risks involved with adding any sort of chemical around your eyes. Eyelash tint is not regulated by the FDA, so if you do choose this option, be really careful about knowing what is in the product you are using. Just like eyelash extensions, false lashes, and even mascara, using any type of chemical can cause an allergic reaction, irritation or dryness to the eyes.

Natural Serums

Getting big, dramatic lashes can be super fun and an instant confidence booster. However, if you’re looking to enhance your own natural beauty and maintain healthy lashes, natural serums are the way to go. All-natural serums lengthen and nourish your lashes using vitamins and nutrients found in natural oils. Especially if you are using a completely all-natural products like our goddess serums, you can be sure that they are safe, chemical-free and environmentally friendly. In addition, it is applied at night right before bed, so there is no extra time added to your morning routine.

If you are looking for a quick fix, this isn’t the option for you as it may take up to 2-3 weeks to see significant enhancement since this is the time it takes for your eyelashes to regenerate. However, the results are well worth the wait and you can also feel really great about doing something amazing for your lashes!
